MIG Killer: 163508 McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing F/A-18C Hornet
of VFA-81 the Sunliners - 16 December 1991
On the 17th January 1991 whilst flying from the USS Saratoga in the Red Sea, Lieutenant Commander Mark Fox got a lock on the first of two MIG-21's flying in left echelon. Releasing a sidewinder first, Fox could not see it tracking, so followed it by releasing a sparrow. 40 seconds later it was all over with Fox claiming the first US Navy kill of the war on the January 17th. The sidewinder did do the deed.
