XB289 had its first flight on 21st August 1956 and then appeared at the SBAC show the following month, after which it was delivered to 53 squadron, then on to the Abingdon wing in 1958.

A Category 3 accident occurred on 26th March 1962, when it was dropping 1 ton containers. One load broke loose from its parachute which was still attached to XB289, causing damage to the rear fuselage. The Aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Abingdon.

After repair, the Aircraft returned to service on 14th May 1962 with 47 squadron when 53 disbanded.

XB289 Left the UK in March 1964 to join 34 squadron, and was Struck Off Charge on the 14th February 1968 and was scrapped at Seletar.
