Like other show goers, RIAT has to be the biggest disappointment of the 2008 airshow season.
Apart from the rain that really only eased here and there, arrivals for the show continued.
For the Queens review, the rain actually stopped! She arrived in Sikorsky S-76A G-VONB with
a bit of sun shining through and was probably bemused at all the drowned rats peering out from
a sodden enclosure.
True to form, there was no rain throughout the 90 aircraft flypast and the Queen also left in
a bit of sun, waving as she walked to the awaiting S-76.
Yet more rain, with puddles resembling the local pond; all that was missing were the ducks!
As we suspected, the show was cancelled for the Saturday & Sunday, but not due to more
rain, but the water logged viewing areas & car parks; a total disaster!
It was open for the Monday departures, which was better, with some sun, but still the rain
persisted. RIAT did put more boarding down, and straw, but this soon became a quagmire with
so many people in the enclosure.
With no show on the weekend, this gave an opportunity to zip
over to Duxford's Flying Legends on the Sunday. There was no rain, but at times, the sky
became very cloudy, but none the less, was, as usual, a good show; especially seeing Liberty
Foundations B-17 ‘Liberty Belle’ that flew over from the US for Legends.
The season was closed out with RAFA Shoreham’s Battle of Britain display. Wow! Where was this
weather for all the other shows?
A glorious summers day, with good pictures, now if only they could just move the whole airport
when the sun moves in the afternoon…
