Sterling Airways was started in 1962, when Eilif Krogager (Danish Pastor and entrepreneur), founder of Danish travel agency Tjæreborg (today part of MyTravel Group), started the Airline with two Douglas DC-6B bought from Swissair.
In 1965 Sterling joined the Jet Set with the arrival of the Airlines first Caravelle. The original Airline became Bankrupt in 1993.
But was reformed in 1994 as Sterling European Airlines with a 3 Aircraft Fleet. In 1996, the Fred Olsen Group Bought the Airline.
Fred Olsen expanded the Airline greatly both in terms of Fleet and in a move from being Charter only, to a Low Cost Scheduled Airline expanded the routes and frequencies flown.
In April 2005 Fred Olsen sold the Airline to Icelandic investment company Fons Eignarhaldsfélag and in June 2005 they bought Maersk Air from the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group and after regulatory approval merged two Airlines into
a new entity Sterling Airlines A/S, which they then sold on in October 2005 to the FL Group, who in in December 2006
sold the Airline to Northern Travel Holding. On the 29 October 2008 Sterling Airlines A/S became bankrupt. Is this the end of the Sterling Story?
