G-BCWJ Canadair CL-44D6 of IAS Cargo Arlines
London Gatwick - May 1976
Douglas Holland Writes:
IAS Cargo Airlines was the trading name of International Aviation Services Ltd., which was formed in late 1966 and commenced operations from London Gatwick in 1967.
Initial Operations were with Bristol Britannia 300F turboprop aircraft. In 1976 Leased G-BCWJ (the Aircraft in the Picture) from
Tradewinds, but the lease was relatively short, the Aircraft being returned to Tradewinds on th 2nd December 1977.
This lease was the only time IAS Operated a CL44.
IAS began to introduce Douglas DC8-50F Aircraft around the time of the CL44 Lease and by 1979 was all-jet with a fleet of
DC8-50F Aircraft.
Also during this period wet-leased in Aircraft from other operators, most infamously Boeing 707-321C
G-BEBP which crashed in Lusaka in May 1977 - Although Dan Air were entirely responsible for the Aircraft and its Operation,
because of the IAS Titles, over Dan Air livery this accident was often attributed to IAS.
In late 1979 IAS merged with TMAC in late 1979 to create British Cargo Airlines, The ink was hardly dry on the documentation
when the new Airline Ceased Operations and went into liquidation.
